Grandma´s milk bread


I can promise you I only got a few recipes I have had in my family for a couple of generations and which we still use regularly. This is one of them, my grandma´s milk bread. We usually bake it once a month, for conveniency we make four plaited buns at once and freeze some of it. You can have it for breakfast with butter and jam, honey,… it´s

also perfect topped with ham or simply plain as a snack.

This is what you will need (to make 2 plaited buns):

  • 2kg all purpose flour
  • 1l milk
  • 2 packages of dry yeast
  • 2 hands of salt
  • 2eggs+1 egg white, use egg yolk for brushing
  • 125g butter

Combine flour and yeast in a huge bowl. Melt butter in a medium pan, add milk and pour into flour mixture. Now start kneading dough until well incorperated and dough is smooth. Set aside covered by a kitchen towel and let rest for at least an hour. Then divide dough into two halfs. use one half to divide into three equal pieces. Roll each into a thin long rope. Bring one of the ends together and start braiding them until you reach the end of the rope. Lay on baking tray, covered by a kitchen towel and let rise for another 30 minutes. Then bake in oven (at oven temperature: 180°C) for 30-45 minutes until dark golden brown.
